A holistic approach to restoring health and balance
Aging is a natural part of life. Many people give up on being healthy and living more fully, saying: “I’m just getting older”. There is some truth in this, however, it is important to remember that each day the body creates new cells. Especially when challenged, we continue to learn and grow physically, mentally and spiritually.
If the effects of aging impair our daily functioning we need to make changes and learn how to reverse those effects. ‘Aches and pains’, mental fog or loss of mental acuity, decrease in libido, weight gain, decreasing muscle mass & increasing fat mass, and so on, lead to difficulty in being as active as we would like to be. These can be changed substantially if not completely reversed.
Diet, meditation, correct exercise, acupuncture, herbs & nutritional supplements, detoxification, and sometimes bio-identical hormones are the primary means to mitigate and reverse some of these symptoms and create an experience of healthy, happy aging.
Allergies arise for a number of reasons. Adrenal function, digestion and diet are three important factors. We offer in-office allergy blood tests to help determine allergic reaction to certain foods, and use nutritional support, acupuncture, and herbs to help with allergy symptoms.
There are many recognized nutritive substances helpful in dealing with the effects of cancer. In our office, diet, exercise, meditation are important and are discussed on an individual basis. Acupuncture is a helpful adjunct for its calming and centering effects, and for dealing with pain.
Detoxing is a term used to describe “getting toxins out”. It is something our bodies do naturally via the liver, kidneys, skin, and intestines. When our bodies become sick they are overwhelmed with toxins. Herbs, nutrition, acupuncture, and sauna are some methods to help the body in clearing them.
A healthy diet with lots of colorful vegetables, lean protein, and very little refined carbohydrate helps your body detox each day. Special supplements, chelation, liver and kidney support with acupuncture, are helpful in this process. Chelation therapy is used specifically when there are toxic metals present.
Hormone Balance & Bio-identical Hormones
At any stage of life we can have issues with hormone balance. Whether we are teenaged, adult, menopausal, or andropausal, hormone therapy can help bring us back into equilibrium. Bio-identical (non-pharmaceutical) hormones are safe and natural, and are used after extensive testing to determine current hormone balance. For more information please read about bio-identical hormones.
Whether from traumatic injury, repetitive stress, internal issues, muscular weakness or imbalance, emotions, or even diet, pain throws us off balance. Whiplash, sciatica, migraines, and tension headaches are common complaints.
Ideally we need to envision growing stronger each day. We need to address pain and its causes because it inhibits us. Ignoring the pain can cause other problems such as rising blood pressure, lack of sleep, and so on. For this reason it is best to speed up the healing process as much as possible so we can continue to exercise and be mobile. Inactivity leads to a decrease in muscle mass and a general weakening of the body, mind, and spirit.
Acupuncture, micro current, moxa, herbs, essential oils, and sometimes injections such as prolo, neural, or trigger point, seek to relieve the root cause of the pain. We use these methods to assist the body in healing itself.
Thyroid issues are becoming a more and more frequent event. Why? While thyroid problems sometimes have a genetic component, the environment plays a big part in thyroid health as well. The interference of environmental toxins such as heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury etc), pesticides, flame retardants, endocrine disrupters such as plastics, and so on interfere with the thyroid’s cell receptor cites, blocking its activity.
Heavy metals can be detected (see heavy metal diagnosis) and removed slowly over time (see chelation therapy), improving thyroid function. Certain trace minerals are required for the thyroid to function and may be lacking. These may need to be supplemented. The first step is to do lab work, and then supplement if needed.
Some of the symptoms of thyroid dysfunction include fatigue, hair loss, constipation, dry skin, brain fog, weight gain or loss, diarrhea, heart palpitations, gall bladder disease, and too much sleeping or insomnia.
Integrative Medicine has many tools to assist in the process of achieving not only optimal weight but also optimal muscle to fat ratio. Diet is important as well as optimal hormone levels (see bio-identical hormones). As blood sugar levels are stabilized food cravings usually disappear. Counseling includes diet, exercise, sleep patterns. Bloodwork is sometimes used to monitor progress. Acupuncture and herbs help to achieve balance and improve energy.
Women navigate several distinct periods in their lives: pre-puberty, puberty, menstration, peri-menopause and post menopause. Each has its own unique set of issues. Most are treated very successfully with integrative medicine, which includes acupuncture, herbs, diet, nutritional supplements, essential oils, and bio-identical hormones.
